The peening hammer, also known as a scythe hammer, is a hammer designed specifically for working on scythes and sickles. Its special shape allows the cutting edge to be gently drawn forward during peening. The faces are slightly domed (rounded) so that each peening blow strikes only a small area of the cutting edge. Peening on an anvil ensures that each blow from above delivers the same force to the workpiece from below.

The peening hammer is a handy tool designed specifically for hammering out, hardening and sharpening scythe and sickle blades. The scythe hammer is made of steel and has domed faces for precise, localized work. The hammer head is securely mounted on an ash handle. When ‘peening’ on a flat anvil (flat face), use the peening hammer to work the scythe blade from the heel to the tip and back again. This draws out (thins) and hardens the cutting edge. It also sharpens the blade and considerably extends its service life. Service life is the amount of time you can work without interruption before signs of wear appear. This method of shaping can also work out nicks up to about 5 millimeters deep in the cutting edge. The peening hammer is a reliable helper for many years.
